Porter Cable Air Compressor

Need help with a PC 2HP/6gal air compressor. Compressor will only compress air up to 40psi and just continues to run. Should cut off at 140PSI. Disconnected the air hose and same problem. Also made sure that the tank is empty of water build up. Went to the PC web site but couldn't fine any information that would help. Any suggestions what may be the problem.
