I have a 6 pc. Craftsman Screw Extractor Set, and ...

I have a 6 pc. Craftsman Screw Extractor Set, and 3 rusted phillips head wood screws. I tried one of the strange bits to unscrew, and it just stripped the head. Do I try to drill into the screw with the threaded end and in what direction, clockwise or counter clockwise?
