changing blade and there is not sufficient thread on spindle, does it need a flange or washer

0 I should have been more descriptive. I undid the nut & carefully removed the old blade watching for washers or flanges. There were none, just the nut. When I put the new blade on, the nut goes to the ends of the threads but there is still play, the blade is not tight at all. Could the washer have worn out and fell when I loosened it?
