silly question but when using to find the correct ...

silly question but when using to find the correct height of kitchen cabinets on the wall opposite to those fixed do you just placr the laser flat on the top of one of the fixed units and point accross the room, or do you have to adjust down as the laser comes out above the base? Cheers
