3. Adjust the angle knob so the bevel of the
cutting tool is flush with the grinding sur-
face.
4. Inspect the cutting edge of the knife. The
edge should contact the grinding wheel
squarely and consistently. Adjustments
can be made by altering the angle of the
chisel in the stationary clamps or by loos-
ening the lock bars and moving the entire
pivot plate along the table until the knife is
square to the grinding wheel.
5. Once you are satisfied with the alignment
of the cutter against the grinding wheel,
lower the wheel slowly and turn on the
machine.
6. Carefully raise the wheel until the grinding
surface contacts the blade. Keep in mind
that with a dry grinding operation, tools can
heat up and lose their temper quickly.
Sharpening should be done lightly and for
short duration to avoid damage to the tool
you’re working with. As with the wider
blades, you can verify that the cutting tool
has been properly ground by applying
marker ink to the bevel.
Once you are proficient with grinding existing
bevel angles, you may want to experiment with
other bevel angles which might suit your particu-
lar situation. We recommend you carefully
research custom bevel angles. There is a narrow
line between improving cutting performance and
ruining your cutting tools. There are some fine
books available which discuss sharpening tech-
niques in detail. Be sure to follow directions
closely if you choose to alter factory-set bevels.
Other Blades
Planer, jointer and other knives are danger-
ously sharp. Use extreme caution, particu-
larly after sharpening. Failure to exercise
care while working near knives could result
in severe injury.
