Troubleshooting: Operating Problems
Trouble Probable Cause Remedy
Table rollers not set properly. Adjust rollers to proper height.
Inadequate support of long boards.
Support long boards with extension
rollers.
Uneven feed roller pressure front to
back.
Adjust feed roller pressure.
Dull knives or knife inserts.
209: Sharpen or replace knives.
209HH: Rotate or replace inserts.
Snipe.
(NOTE: Snipe cannot
be eliminated, but
can be so minimized
as to be negligible.)
Lumber not butted properly.
Butt end to end each piece of stock
as they pass through.
Planing wood with high moisture
content.
Remove moisture by drying, or use
different stock.
Fuzzy grain.
Dull knives or knife inserts.
209: Sharpen or replace knives.
209HH: Rotate or replace inserts.
Too heavy a cut. Adjust proper depth of cut.
Knives (or inserts) cutting against the
grain.
Cut along the grain where possible.
Torn grain.
Dull knives or knife inserts.
209: Sharpen or replace knives.

Planer table rough or dirty.
Clean pitch and residue from table,
and apply paste wax.
Belt slipping on pulleys. Tighten belt.
Poor feeding of
lumber.
Surface of feed rollers too smooth.
Lightly roughen the feed roller surface
with sandpaper.
