9. Mount a dial indicator so the dial plunger is
on the tailstock barrel before making adjust-
ments
to the tailstock.
10. Refer
to Cutting Shallow Tapers With The
Tailstock on Page 27 for making adjust-
ments
to the tailstock center. Turn another
0.010"
off of the diameter and check for a
taper. Repeat this process as necessary until
the desired amount of accuracy is achieved.

5. Place the live center in the tailstock.
6. Attach a lathe dog to the bar stock and mount
it between
centers (see Figure 36).
7. Turn
approximately 0.010" off the diameter.
8. Measure the stock with a micrometer.
—If the stock is thicker at the tailstock end,
the
tailstock needs to be moved toward the
operator half the distance of the amount of
the taper (see Figure 37).
—If the stock is thinner at the tailstock end,
the
tailstock needs to be moved away
from
the operator half the distance of the
amount of the taper (see Figure 38).
