Disassembling the Cylinder and the Piston Rod
1. Place the wrench flats of the cylinder into the vise.
Tighten the vise.
Do not over-tighten the vise. Damage to the cylinder may
occur.
2. Remove the packing nut.
3. Gently tap the piston rod assembly out of the lower end
of the cylinder with a rubber mallet.

When removing the piston, keep the piston from falling or
the piston may be damaged.
4. Remove the lower leather and UHMWPE packings and
the lower female adapter from the cylinder if they did not
come out with the piston rod.
5. Remove the lower male adapter and the lower wave spring.
6. Remove the upper leather and UHMWPE packings, the
upper female adapter, the upper male adapter, and the
upper wave spring.
7. Insert the connecting pin through hole in the piston rod.
Lock the connecting pin in the vise jaws so the piston rod
is positioned vertically..
Do not put the piston rod itself into the vise. The vise
jaws will damage piston rod.
8. Remove the jam nut.
9. Remove the piston seat retainer with a 5/16'' hex wrench.
10. Remove the piston rod assembly from the vise.
11. Remove the washer, the upper ball seat, the upper ball,
the upper ball cage, and the upper ball stop disk from
lower end of piston rod assembly.
12. Inspect the upper ball, and the upper ball seat for
damage. If the upper ball seat is worn or damaged it can
be flipped to the unused side during re-assembly. The
upper ball must be replaced if it is damaged or if the
upper ball seat is flipped. The washer must be replaced.
Reassembling the Fluid Section
1. Insert the connecting pin through hole in the piston rod.
Lock the connecting pin in the vise jaws so the piston rod
is positioned vertically
2. Insert the upper ball stop disk, the upper ball cage, the
new upper ball, the new upper ball seat, and the new
washer into the piston assembly.
3. Place removable lock-tite on the piston seat retainer and
insert the retainer into the piston rod assembly. Tighten
the piston seat retainer (Torque to 250 in./lbs.).
4. Place removable lock-tite on the jam nut. Tighten the jam
nut onto the piston seat retainer (Torque to 200 in./lbs.)
5. Remove the piston rod assembly from the vice.
6. Place the wrench flats of the cylinder into the vise.
Tighten the vise.
7. Soak the new upper leather packings in linseed oil for 5
minutes. Do not over-soak.
8. Insert the new lower wave spring and the new lower male
adapter into the cylinder.
9. Remove the new lower leather packings from the oil.
Install the new lower leather packings alternately with the
new lower UHMWPE packings.
10. Insert the new lower female adapter.
11. Insert the piston rod assembly into the bottom of the
cylinder. A slight force may be required to push the piston
rod up through the lower packings.
12. Place the new lower o-ring, the new lower ball seat, the
lower ball cage, the new lower ball, and the lower ball stop
disk into the inlet valve holder.
13. Place anti-seize compound on the lower threads of the
cylinder.
14. Place the new upper o-ring on the cylinder.
15. Loosen the vise and tilt the cylinder assembly to a 45
degree angle. Tighten the vise.
16. Tighten the inlet valve holder onto the cylinder until the
cylinder bottoms out in the inlet valve holder. Make sure
to use the wrench flats on the inlet valve holder to tighten
completely (Torque to 40 ft./lbs.).
17. Soak the new upper leather packings in linseed oil for 5
minutes. Do not over-soak.
