Steady Rest

T
he steady rest is used for the same reasons as
the follow rest and also when support is needed
for a workpiece that cannot be supported by a
center in the tailstock. This is especially useful
when the end of a long workpiece is to be faced
(

.
1. Place
the steady rest on the lathe bed on one
side of the apron or the other. If the end is to
be faced, the steady rest is placed on the left
hand side of the apron.
2. Place
the clamp shoe in position and secure
with the cap screw. (Refer to Figure 8 on
Page 17.)
3. Loosen the thumb screws for each brass
finger
and adjust the brass fingers to allow
plenty of clearance for the workpiece.
4. Loosen the knurled thumb wheel, and pivot
the
head out of the way (see Figure 33).
5. Load the workpiece into the chuck.
6. Oil each brass finger and pivot the head back
into
place and secure with the lock bolt.
7. Adjust the brass fingers until they lightly
touch
the workpiece.
8. Use the indicator as described in Follow
Rest on Page 32 to
set the brass finger in the
proper position.
