Spindle does not raise or
lower easily.
1. Spindle slide or elevation leadscrew
clogged with sawdust.
1. Clean the spindle slide and leadscrew, then
lubricate them (GX^\*.
).
Workpiece burns when
cut.
1. Dull cutter.
2. Too slow of a feed rate.
3. Pitch build-up on cutter.
4. Cutter rotating in the wrong direc-
tion (climb cutting).
5. Taking too deep of a cut.
1. Replace cutter or have it professionally sharpened.
2. Increase feed speed.
3. Clean cutter with a blade and bit cleaning solution.
4. Reverse the direction of the cutter rotation so it cuts
against direction of feed.
5. Make several passes of light cuts rather than one
heavy cut
Fuzzy grain. 1. Improper dust collection allowing
dust/chips to build up and inter-
fere with cutting operation.
2. Wood may have high moisture con-
tent or surface wetness.
3. Dull cutter.
4. Inherent characteristic of wood
type.
1. Use correct dust collection system that is adequate
to efficiently remove dust/chips during operation.
2. Check moisture content and allow to dry if moisture
is more than 20%.
3. Replace or have cutter professionally sharpened.
4. Use a different wood type or plan for a sanding
operation.
Chipping. 1. Knots or conflicting grain direction
in wood.
2. Nicked or chipped cutter.
3. Feeding workpiece too fast.
4. Taking too deep of a cut.
5. Cutting against the grain of the
wood.
1. Inspect workpiece for knots and grain direction; only
use clean stock.
2. Replace the cutter, or have it professionally sharp-
ened.
3. Slow down the feed rate.
4. Take a smaller depth of cut. (Always reduce cutting
depth when working with hard woods.)
5. Cut with the grain of the wood.
Divots in the edge of the
cut (snipe).
1. Inconsistent feed speed.
2. Inconsistent pressure against the
fence and rub collar.
3. Fence not adjusted correctly.
4. Workpiece edge is warped.
5. Some amount of snipe may be
inevitable.
1. Move smoothly or use a power feeder.
2. Apply constant pressure.
3. Adjust fence.
4. Use jointer/table saw to square up workpiece
edge.
5. Plan ahead by shaping workpiece and cutting off
ends to remove snipe.
