hub
A device that extends physically a network from a segment to another one.
HyperText Markup Language (HTML)
A markup language used to structure text and multimedia files (text, graphics, audio, and
video) and to set up hypertext links between documents; used extensively on the World Wide
Web.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
The set of rules for transferring files (text, graphic images, sound, video, and other multimedia
files) on the World Wide Web.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer (HTTPS)
Also known as HTTP over SSL; a Web protocol developed by Netscape and built into its
browser that encrypts and decrypts user page requests as well as the pages that are returned by
the Web server. HTTPS is really just the use of the Netscape Secure Socket Layer (SSL) as a
sublayer under its regular HTTP application layering. (HTTPS uses port 443 instead of HTTP
port 80 in its interactions with the lower layer, TCP/IP.) Contrast with Secure HTTP (S-HTTP).
I18N
Abbreviation for “internationalization,” derived from the first and last letters and the idea of the
intervening 18 letters. Internationalization is the process of planning and implementing
products and services so that they can easily be adapted to specific local languages and cultures,
a process called localization (L10N). The internationalization process is sometimes called
translation or localization enablement (LE).
ICMP
See Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP).
