Managing Devices
Chapter 4 Discovering and Managing Objects 85
Managing Devices
Devices of several types are the components that make up networks. These devices,
or nodes, are interconnected in the network by links. The types of devices that make
up networks are
■ hubs, which interconnect nodes at the physical level (OSI level 1)
■ switches, which interconnect nodes at the logical link level (OSI level 2)
■ routers, which interconnect nodes at the network level (OSI level 3)
■ servers and clients, which run distributed applications
■ probes, which measure the network activity
■ traffic auditors, which monitor, control, and accelerate network traffic
■ firewalls, which prevent unauthorized access of a computer system
■ load balancers, which extend the capacity of a Web service beyond that of a single
physical server
Devices that host SNMP agents and Management Information Bases (MIBs) can be
managed by PATROL DashBoard. A password, called a community name, is
required for access to an SNMP agent.
Adding a Device Manually Instead of through Discovery
Typically, you discover devices by using the Discoveries portion of the navigation
tree, but you can also manually add devices to your network.
To Add a Device
1
In the navigation tree, right-click Network or a domain.
2 Choose New => Device.
The Device Creation screen is displayed, as shown in Figure 27:
