router discovery
The discovery of the devices listed in the routers’ routing tables. Contrast with generic discovery.
RTT
See Round Trip Time (RTT).
SAA
See Service Assurance Agent (SAA).
Secure HTTP (S-HTTP)
An extension to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) that allows the secure exchange of files
on the World Wide Web. Each S-HTTP file is either encrypted, contains a digital certificate, or
both. For a given document, S-HTTP is an alternative to HTTPS. A major difference is that
S-HTTP allows the client to send a certificate to authenticate the user, whereas, using SSL, only
the server can be authenticated. S-HTTP is more likely to be used in situations where the server
represents a bank and requires authentication from the user that is more secure than a user ID
and password.
self activation
In PATROL DashBoard, an option in router discovery and generic discovery that automatically
activates the collection of the SNMP metrics for a network device as soon as it has been
discovered.
Service Assurance Agent (SAA)
A software program embedded within Cisco IOS devices that performs active monitoring, the
generation and analysis of traffic to measure performance between Cisco IOS devices or
between Cisco IOS devices and network application servers.
service level agreement (SLA)
A contract between a network service provider and a customer that specifies, usually in
measurable terms, what services the network service provider will furnish. Many Internet
service providers (ISPs) provide their customers with an SLA.
Service Level Agreement Manager (SLAM)
In CiscoWorks2000 Service Management Solution (CW-SMS), a program that manages
information about SLAs.
S-HTTP
See Secure HTTP (S-HTTP).
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
A TCP/IP protocol used in sending and receiving e-mail. However, because it is limited in its
ability to queue messages at the receiving end, it is usually used with one of two other protocols,
POP3 or Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP).
