Knowledge Module (KM)
A set of files from which a PATROL Agent receives information about resources running on a
monitored computer. A KM file can contain the actual instructions for monitoring objects or
simply a list of KMs to load. KMs are loaded by a PATROL Agent and a PATROL console.
KMs provide information for the way monitored computers are represented in the PATROL
interface, for the discovery of application instances and the way they are represented, for
parameters that are run under those applications, and for the options available on object pop-up
menus. The PATROL DashBoard Availability Module contains a KM.
label
The name of a network object as displayed in the PATROL DashBoard left pane tree. It can be
modified in the corresponding property page.
LAN
See local area network (LAN).
local area network (LAN)
A network that connects computers in a relatively small area, such as a room or a group of
buildings, enabling the sending and receiving of files and shared access to resources. Contrast
with WAN.
Management Information Base (MIB)
A formal description of a set of network objects that can be managed using the Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP). The format of the MIB is defined as part of the SNMP. (All other
MIBs are extensions of this basic management information base.) MIB-I refers to the initial MIB
definition; MIB-II refers to the current definition. SNMPv2 includes MIB-II and adds some new
objects.

multicast
A communication between a single sender and multiple receivers. Contrast with broadcast and
unicast.
